Overview

Curling was first introduced to the Cowichan Valley in December 1952. The original site of the curling rink was on James Street, where the Island Savings Centre now stands. The ice surface was used for both curling and skating. In 1965, property was purchased at its current site, 3191 Sherman Road, and Dr. Peter Postuk presented drawings of the new building. Ken Brownsey was the construction chairman. Clearing of the land was completed by Ellison Excavating; gravel was donated by Butler Brothers; plywood by BC Forest Products; and timbers by Don Hammond of Western Forest Industries. Additional supplies were donated by Joe Gergel of Garner Builders and others. Many of those who donated would take a membership as payment.

The executive of the first Duncan Curling Club consisted of Al Taylor, President; Clayton Wright, Vice President; Don McCool, Director; Dr. Mel Smith, Chairman of Finance; and Vera Wilson, Secretary-Treasurer. Raising funds for the new facility was a huge task. Memberships were sold as $200 for a single and $300 for families. With the community really behind the project, work began and additional donations were received. Work on the building was well underway when, in the summer of 1966, there was a carpenters' strike. What to do now? Volunteers were organized and took over the task. A crane was rented to hoist and put the arches and Glulam beams in place. The entire plywood roof was put on with volunteer labour! More volunteers laid five miles of pipe for the ice and ice machine. Brine was then mixed to fill the pipes. The ladies helped wherever possible; they cleaned up sawdust, moved gravel, provided goodies, coffee and lunches for the men working. When the strike ended, the rest of the building was completed and the ice machine was installed. The painting of the ice was done by the volunteers and completed the night that the first bonspiel was to start. Clayton Wright was President at the time and he spent part of that night napping on a cot in the washroom to be sure that everything would be ready for morning! The official opening was performed by Reeve Donald Morton of North Cowichan on February 25, 1967 and he even threw the first rock. That was one historic day!! The Duncan Curling Club is still owned and operated by its membership, currently over 100 members. The club is proud to have 14 provincial champions, eight of which involve the Harper family. Competitive curling has always been of high caliber and each year we have numerous teams vying for zone and provincial titles. In 2013 our facility was renamed the "Glen Harper Curling Centre," in honour of the driving force of curling in the Cowichan Valley. We have five sheets with very nice viewing areas and banquet facilities in our upstairs lounge area. We also have a concession, an "in-house caterer," and small Pro Shop. Four major bonspiels are organized by our mens, ladies and mixed leagues. Senior and junior curlers also put on bonspiels for valley athletes. In March 2014, we hosted the Provincial Mixed Championships for a second time (previously in April 2002). Other past events have included the 1994-95 Provincial Senior Ladies Championships, the 1992 Western Canadian Masters, and the 1991 BC Winter Games. Our Club proved to the Province that Duncan Curling Club can host major and significant Bonspiels, after the club hosted the 2017 BC Scotties Provincials! We look forward to another exciting season, beginning October 5, 2017.
